HOW CAN YOU BE INVOLVED?

SCHOOL NURSES

Local citizens are now working on a developing a plan to address the health needs of students in schools.  Our plan will outline what we want for our kids here in Henderson County and how we'll get there.  Citizens are welcome to join our efforts.  To join our planning team, please contact Elisha (see below).

AFFORDABLE HOUSING

The United Agenda for Children has representatives who serve on the Affordable Housing Coalition (AHC).  In 2008 the AHC achieved one goal of implementing a Minimum Housing Code in Henderson County.  Public Health Nurses are reporting improvements in the homes of the people they serve in our community. In 2009, we will participate in a regional needs assessment for affordable housing.  If you would like to participate on the Affordable Housing Coalition, please contact Patrick Kennedy at 692-4744.

PRESCHOOL EDUCATION

In the Fall of 2009, we will conduct an employer/employee survey to identify the child care needs of our county's workforce.  To be sure your company gets invited to participate, please contact Elisha Freeman.

Event - On April 16, 2010, we will host a Legislative Town Hall from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in Conference Hall at Blue Ridge Community College.  Citizens will have a chance to speak to elected leaders in the NC State Government about issues surrounding early childhood.  To join our event planning committee, please contact Elisha Freeman.

MENTAL HEALTH FOR KIDS

We are addressing the need for increased access to mental health services in the schools and in our community in our work on the school nurse issue (above).  To join these efforts, please contact Elisha Freeman (below).

MENTORING PROGRAMS
The United Agenda for Children is acting as convener of information about the mentoring opportunities available in our community.  Click here to view the Mentoring Opportunities booklet if you are interested in mentoring a child.

SOCIAL VENUES FOR YOUTH & TEENS

Workers needed here to convene groups of youth to take on this issue.  Youth are needed to gather information about social venues for teens and deliver that information using technology that teens follow.

HELPING YOUTH MAKE POST GRAD PLANS

Our public schools and local community college are doing a great job to help local young people make post grad plans. Many of our clubs and civic organzations for youth are also doing the same.  Parents are encouraged to stay informed about these opportunties by asking teachers and counselors.

Event - The College Foundation of North Carolina will offer a Lunch 'n Learn on October 13th at noon for parents of elementary and middle school children called "College Is In Your Child's Future.  Will You Be Ready?"  This workshop will focus on early awareness adn planning for college with young children and will introduce participants to tools and activities on the CFNC website.  To attend, please RSVP to Elisha Freeman at 698-0674 x 107.
