ABOUT OUR CHILDREN

In order to understand how well our children are doing and to help us decide if we must do something more, or less, or better... we need to answer the question: Are the children in my home town safe, healthy and well educated?

So, we start with the numbers. Data collected on common indicators of child well-being give us a snapshot of children in Henderson County. As you read further, you will learn how we determined what mattered and why. You can download the report data, the demographic study of Henderson County, and the raw demographic data (see links below). This information will be used to guide discussion at Speak Out for Kids on October 20, 2007.

We have gathered data about kids in our community and organized it around five questions:

* Are babies born healthy and do children stay healthy and well?
* Are children living in safe and stable homes?
* Are children living in a safe and supportive community?
* Are children ready for school and succeeding in school?
* Are youth prepared for adulthood?

Each question has a set of accepted indicators that offer a snapshot of life for children in Henderson County.
